However, since there is no assigned seating and passengers are free to take any available seat, any Southwest newcomer may experience some initial shock when boarding starts. Although all of the seats are the same (the entire aircraft is in economy class), paying the extra “Business Select” cost allows you to board earlier.

It’s easy to forget that a major player is absent from each and every search result because we’re so used to seeing numerous flight options at once on a wide range of airlines when we visit online travel agency (OTA) sites: Southwest Airlines.

As previously stated, none of the OTAs or search engines such as Google Flights receive Southwest’s pricing. It just takes a little more searching on the Southwest website itself to uncover their low fares, mind you.

It’s also important to note that Southwest operates somewhat differently from other airlines, whose flight schedules extend up to 11 months in advance of today’s date. Although the farthest future date is often seven months away, they don’t have a specific number of months in which you can book a trip, and they occasionally release fares in batches. The Low Fare Calendar on Southwest Airlines functions essentially the same as other calendar search tools on other online travel agencies (OTAs), showing a calendar month by month with the starting price of airline tickets on each day. This makes figuring out which departure and return dates have the best deals easy.

How to locate the most affordable dates using the Southwest Low Fare Calendar

The Low Fare Calendar can be accessed in two ways. Below the “Depart” and “Arrive” search boxes on the main Southwest website is a link to the Low Fare Calendar.

When you click on the link, a new tab appears in your browser. If it isn’t already filled in based on your location, enter the departing city and airport. Additionally, provide the arrival city and airport. Both the departure and return dates must fall within a month-long window. Click on the “Depart Month” box to switch the month you begin.

The short wording to the left of the yellow “Search” button is worth mentioning. This indicates how far in advance Southwest currently books flights, so you’ll need to check back later if your trip is scheduled for a date later than the one shown.

On this screen, you can change how many people are traveling. Additionally, you can change from a round-trip itinerary to a one-way or multi-city journey using the options above the search fields. After adjusting the search criteria to your preference, click the “Search” button in yellow.
